This blog is about the new trend in education: mastery-based learning and standards-based grading. I will be specifically focusing on how these concepts are incorporated in Physical Education.
I work at Windsor Locks Middle School (6-8), in Connecticut, so you will see that most of my posts are geared toward the middle school age, though they can be adapted to fit your needs. Our district was one of the first district’s in the state of CT to offer a standards-based report card for our class of 2020 students (they are currently sophomores).
I have presented this topic at the state, regional and national level and have consulted with schools who are looking for more information and guidance in this area.
I am entering my 13th year of teaching middle school students. I received my Bachelor’s degree from Westfield State College (MA) in Movement Science, my Master’s degree from Cambridge College (MA) in Educational Psychology and post graduate studies at Loyola Marymount College (CA) in Health & Wellness.
I was the 2005 MAPHERD “Outstanding Future Professional” award winner, 2008 CTAHPERD “Outstanding New Professional” award winner, 2010 East Windsor Middle School Outstanding Teacher, 2015 ShapeAmerica Mabel Lee Award Winner and the 2017 CTAHPHERD “Outstanding Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year“.
